Reminder gospel 1. focus on external performance à proud like Pharisees 2. feeling guilty – exposed to disciplines Christian life – obedience, service and we respond, but not as successful as others; dealing some sins heart impure thoughts; impatience lack disc. Gospel applied everyday frees us to be honest with ourselves and God Assurance total forgiveness through blood of Christ; don’t need top play games What is Gospel? 1. Nature of Man dead spiritually Eph. 2:1 helpless Rom. 5:6 sinners Rom. 5:8 enemies of God Rom. 5:10 children of wrath Eph. 2:3 separated/strangers Eph. 2:12 living domain of darkness Col. 1:13 captive of Satan 2 Tim. 2:24 blind 2 Cor. 4:4 far off Eph. 2:13 Gospel – general far off -- brought near Eph. 2:12-13 delivered from domain of darkness to kingdom son Col. 1:13-14 when you were dead Christ made alive Col. 2:13 John 6:44 No one come Father unless…
2. Justification – imputed righteousness of Christ
Legal act of God by which he declares the sinner righteous on the basis of the perfect righteousness of Christ. Takes place outside the sinner in the tribunal of God. Removes the guilt of sin and is a once for all times act. Not only has Christ taken penalty for our sins but give us His performance – positively obeying the Father in everything -- as our own. Rom. 5:1 2 Cor. 5:21 Eph. 2:1-9 Col. 2:13-15 Rom. 3:23-24 Eph. 2:12-13 Formerly far off brought near Rom. 3:23-24 All sinned – justified as a gift by His grace through redemption which is in Christ 2 Cor. 5:21 Made him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf in order that we may have righteousness of God in Him took sins but also gave us His performance 3. Regeneration – imparted righteousness of Christ “The creation of spiritual life in those dead in sin (Eph. 2:1). It occurs on the depth of the human heart infusing new life which is capable of spiritual awareness, perception and response and is no longer alienated from God (Eph. 4:18).”
“conscious” effects regeneration in conversion – the response of turning toward God in repentant faith which accompanied the hearing of the gospel. Task evang. Midwife not equal to parent Col. 2:13 4. Union with Christ – two different aspects of justification 1. declared not guilty before God 2. declared righteous in Christ – 2 Cor. 5:21 two different aspects of union with Christ 1. representative union 2. vital union
(1) representative union – Rom. 5:18 through 1 transgression sin entered the world resulting in condemnation, though 1act of righteousness salvation entered world. transgression by Adam represented us as if we sinned ourselves salvation by Christ represented us in sacrifice for sin as if we had one it ourselves
(2) vital union – not only does sin no longer reign but grace reigns (Rom. 5:21). The life of Christ enters the life of the believer through the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:9-11; Eph. 1:13-14). The believer is connected to the life changing power of Christ as a branch is connected to a vine (John 15). Through the indwelling Holy Spirit and life of Christ we receive not only right standing before God but power which enables us to live the Christian life.
We are not only saved by the grace and power of God but we are sanctified and enabled to minister by the grace and power of God. John 15:4-5 restful surrender Acts 1:8 Col. 1:29 an act of reliance 5. Indwelling Holy Spirit Eph. 1:13-14; Rom. 8:9; John 15 “Jesus will still be spiritually present with His followers in person. Holy Spirit whose indwelling will make real among them the presence of members Trinity, provide continued teaching and guidance, equip them for witness and move world accept their msg.”
the principle work of the Spirit in applying redemption lies in making us holy and being filled with the Spirit simply means having all our faculties under His control rather tan under control of sin. Eph. 5:18 context sanctif. Rom. 8:13
6. Power of sin broken Rom. 6:14
7. Authority in spiritual conflict – the church is on the offensive, the blows it receives are from retreating enemy. Pilgrim’s Progress – 2 lions chained either side of road -the forces of darkness are so chained by victory of Christ they are unable to do anything which ultimately harms the cause of Christ. The battles we fight should not be causes of anxiety. They force us back to reliance upon Christ redemptive work and enhance our dignity and authority as redeemed saints who have the power to judge angels. 1 Cor. 6:3 James 4:7 1 John 4:4 Eph. 6:14-18 Rom. 16:20 Luke 10:18-19 Col. 2:15
Col. 2:13-15 And Can It Be vs. 3 pg. 8 The Solid Rock vs. 1,4 pg. 20 Hallelujah, What a Savior pg. 69 Gift(s) of Holy Spirit given Rom. 12:6 1 Cor. 12:7 Each believer is given a unique, supernatural gift or power by the Holy Spirit at regeneration for the service of other in the body of Christ Adoption richest answer of what a Christian is – “someone who has God as His Father. To those who belong to Christ the Holy, omnipotent God is a loving Father. They belong to His family; they may approach Him without hear and always be sure of His fatherly concern and care. He is not an orphan but a son with all of the rights of a son or heir to the kingdom. Rom. 8:15-17 Gal. 4:4-7, 3:23 Eph. 1:5, 11 Luke 15:11-24 Ps. 103:13 Heb. 12:7 Hostile Now Reconciled Col. 1:20 Dead – Alive Eph. 2:1-5 Alien – Adopted Eph. 1:5 Power enemy – Authority Col. 2:15 Under Law – Grace Rom. 6 Far Off – Brought Near Eph. 2:13 Domain Darkness – Kingdom Son Col. 1:13 Condemned – Justified Eph. 1:4
