1 John 2:3—we know we belong to Christ because we have a desire (spark) to keep His                                                               commandments

Sanctification is fanning the spark and adding fuel

“Sanctification is our growth in Christlikeness not knowledge.  It is a progressive experience covering our entire Christian life from salvation to glorification.”

Rom. 8:29 “for whom he foreknew…”

Gal. 4:19 “my beloved children…”

Sanctification is based upon the foundation of what Christ has done.  Eph. 4:1

Sanctification is based upon the ongoing application of the gospel to daily life

                                For ways to approach sanctification

1)       I can do it through self effort – legalism, self-righteousness, eventually give up

2)       Turn it over to God; passive; let go and let God; naïve view nature indwelling sin; leads to lawlessness, self-centeredness; redefined sin

3)       God can help me – I can handle little things need God’s help big things; variation #1; mix works – grace

4)       God enable me – dependent discipline; Col. 1:29, 1 Cor. 15:10; put yourself under the shower and put soap on your body

Saved by grace –sanctified by grace
